TOADS

  • SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS for TOADS
    • Toads are fat-bodied and stubby
    • They have short hind legs
    • Warty and dry skin (are the ones mostly toads in dryer climates)
    • Bony ridges on top of their heads that is pretty noticable with swelling behind the eyes.
    • Toads are often brownish or grayish in color with "jewel-like" shiny eyes with transverse pupils and slightly webbed toes just like the frogs!
    • They can leap but not as far as frogs do.
    • Toads are frogs that have bumpy, drier skin and have legs that are built for walking instead of jumping.
    • The tongue of the toad is attached to the front of its mouth. HOW DO THEY USE IT YOU ASK!?!The tongue is flicked forward from the mouth, and the sticky tip grasps the prey and carries it back to the mouth. By the way, most of them don't have teeth.
WHAT DO THEY EAT??

They mostly eat insects basically just like fogs do. They are carnivorous which means they eat other animals--invertebrates. Like grasshoppers, spiders, worms, flies, snails, etc. Some species eat small fish. Some may even eat small reptiles and mammals as well, like mice and lizards. They don't really chew. Most toads don't have teeth like the frogs but some do. So all of their preys are swallowed whole.
They actually catch their prey just like how the frogs do.To find out what other things they eat and their diets at different stages of their life check out the "FROGS" page.

SOME TONGUE FLICKING ACTION![you have to watch it's kinda funny]

HOW LONG DO THEY LIVE?
Not much data is found on how long they live so not many people really know. It may be around 10 years or so but they could live up to 40 years in captivity.

MATING AND REPRODUCTION
Mating and reproduction is basically the same way frogs mate and make baby tadpoles.
During mating season, for frogs and toads they make croaking sounds or also called as their mating calls. Males croak to be able to find its mate. And when the female comes, and lays her eggs, the male climbs behind her and adds his sperm to the water to allow fertilization to begin. To understand and be more specific with the development of a frog from its time in the egg to its life as a tadpole, here are some videos and a diagram to know how metamorphosis happens.
This is just the more specific stuff about their breeding but if you want to see how they mate in general go to the ABOUT and FROGS pages and you will be able to find more information there as well.
TO FIND THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOADS IT CAN ALSO BE FOUND IN THE "FROGS" PAGE SINCE THEY ARE BOTH ALIKE IN MANY ASPECTS INCLUDING THEIR TRANSFORMATIONS THROUGH METAMORPHOSIS.
